Finally, Off-Grid Power For Town or City Houses

Introducing The Power Station Independent Energy System

Energy Independence with the Security of Grid Support

An affordable pathway to full off-grid living

If you have dreamed of being fully off-grid, but you currently live in town or are connected to the grid, then our new Independent Energy System (IES) could be the perfect and affordable solution for you.

Pricing starts at $29,500 inc GST for an ‘average’ home.

The Power Station Independent Energy System (IES) is a new concept in independent living. Made in New Zealand, it’s a fully off-grid solar power system that can be installed in an existing grid-connected home. The grid connection is used only as a backup to top up your batteries when required—not to power your house.

With the flexibility to start more affordably and add more batteries and solar panels later, you’re in control of how much savings you want to achieve and how much money you want to spend to achieve it.

At any time, you can cut the cord completely and ditch the power bill! It’s simply a matter of adding more solar panels and battery modules.

If you’re keen to learn more, or even just a bit curious, we’re offering a Free Design Service so you can find out how the IES might work for you. Click below to get started.

The new Power Station Independent Energy System is a new concept in off-grid solar, designed for people living in town or the city.

How it Works

D uring daylight hours, energy from the sun passes through your solar panels to your Power Station Independent Energy System (IES), which is then sent back to your home’s fuseboard as usable AC power. At the same time, the battery bank inside the IES is filled by energy from your solar panels. This battery power can be accessed by your home after dark or on dark days.

Before installation, you can choose to either take power from the grid or to go fully off-grid by connecting an approved auto-start generator.

You’ll need to select one of the two backup options to top up your batteries because they’ll need it, particularly on consecutive dark days in winter.

Utilising grid power as backup usually costs 30–50% less than going fully off-grid. That’s because a full off-grid system requires extra solar panels, batteries, and an approved generator.

Need an estimate? No worries. We can usually give you accurate pricing for either option after only 15 minutes on the phone or via video call. Every Power Station Independent Energy System is customised to your situation based on your goals, your local sunshine hours, and the level of savings or independence you seek.

Pricing

Start small and grow your savings, or ditch the grid completely!

Pricing starts at $29,500 inc GST for the components for our Medium Home System (for the ‘average’ home). But for a tiny house, pricing could be as low as $15,995 inc GST.

As an example, our Medium Home System could save you up to 70% on your power bill, if you programme the grid to fill the battery overnight on low night rates. If your power use is higher than the ‘average’ home, you’ll need more panels and batteries to achieve similar savings.

Sizing and pricing can increase up to $100,000 inc GST for very large households with high daily power use, who want to be completely off-grid and 100% independent.

Every Power Station IES is customised for you and based on a few factors. These include your goals, your local sunshine hours, your power use for the last 12 months, your budget, and how much you want to save on your power bill.

If you value independence—and like the idea of this new concept as an affordable future pathway to achieve full off-grid solar, our solution could be a perfect fit.

You’re in control of how much savings you want to achieve and how much money you want to spend to achieve it. That’s why the pricing below is a guideline only.

FAQs

The Power Station Independent Energy System is an innovation that allows households or businesses to power their property with a fully compliant off-grid solar system.

Full off-grid systems require a generator to top up the battery bank on dark days, but the IES can achieve the same by connecting to the grid to top up the battery bank overnight at low power rates.

Rather than a system that provides only basic power during a power cut, the IES allows your home to operate as normal.

You may decide to start with a basic level of independence, if you want to choose to generate 50-70% of your own power. At any time, you can simply add more components to save more power, all the way to fully disconnecting from the grid for full independence.

Power Station New Zealand is a division of SolarKing.

SolarKing is a privately owned New Zealand company. They have been a pioneer of the solar industry with over 4,000 installations, including commercial solar, residential solar and off-grid solar in New Zealand.

The in-house engineering capability of SolarKing extends to Power Station, making the company a leader in the off-grid solar area, not just a designer but as a manufacturing company.

Except for solar panels and battery storage, components are imported and assembled in our facility in Auckland.

Power Station systems are exported throughout the Pacific region, including the powering of Pitcairn Island in the South Pacific, where over 30 Power Station systems have been installed.

Research and development is a key component of Power Station’s operation. For example the current Ultra Power Station units represent the 5th generation of systems over the last decade.

In-house technical support of the Power Station systems (including the IES), puts the company head and shoulders ahead of other competitors.

Warranties are held by us (the manufacturer) and free ongoing phone and email support is always available.

There are two groups of customers who would suit the Power Station IES:

  1. Grid-connected customers who have a strong desire to be independent from the grid eventually, but who want to start at a lower price point and expand over time.
  2. Grid-connected customers who want protection from grid disruptions (power cuts). These customers may live in rural areas that are subject to frequent power outages who want the ability to power the house as normal.
The final size (and cost) of your Power Station IES depends on a few factors, including:

  • Your power usage over 24 hours in winter. This is your off-grid solar load evaluation.
  • Your local sunshine hours, which affect the number of solar panels you will need.
  • Your budget and appetite for savings. You may wish to pay a lower price with a smaller IES system and achieve a 50-60% savings, or add batteries and more panels for an 80-90% savings. The smaller your starting system, the more power you’ll take from the grid to top up your batteries.

There are three “Base” IES Systems. They are Small, Medium and Large. Check out the details and current pricing here.

For each base system, the number of additional solar panels and batteries added (if any) will be based on your situation, goals and budget.

Typically, we’ll need a 10-15 minute chat over the phone or via video call once you get in touch. At the end of the call you’ll have a good idea of your options and pricing.

Your system size depends on a few factors, which we’ll need to understand first.

These include your goals, your local sunshine hours, your power use for the last 12 months, your budget, and how much you want to save on your power bill.

Your level of savings on the power bill is up to you and how much you’d like to invest to achieve those savings.

For instance, an ‘average’ home with say, 20-25kWh of power use on average, could save up to 70% on the power bill with our Medium Home System for $29,500 inc GST.

Some families are happy to just take the ‘sting’ out of the bill (save 50%), while others want full off-grid solar capability.

Yes. Completely disconnecting from the national grid is easy with the Power Station IES.

The most important factors for a full off-grid solar system are the correct number of solar panels and battery modules for your situation.

While you can connect a lower-priced (undersized) IES system to run your house, the generator will run frequently, causing noise pollution and the cost of fuel.

We offer a free design service to correctly size your solution based on your goals, your daily power use over 24 hours in winter, your local sunshine hours, your lifestyle factors unique to your household and more.

Savings will depend on:

  • Your current kWh rate you pay now
  • Your current average daily kWh usage
  • The size of the system you install
  • Your appetite for savings. The more you want to save, the more panels and batteries you’ll need and the higher the price.

You can choose if you want to pay a lower price and save 40-60%, or pay a higher price and save more.

If your goals are to have some level of independence whereby the grid is used to top up your batteries if needed, you will not need a generator.

If you want to be totally independent from the national grid from day one or later, then you will need a generator to top up the battery bank when needed.
